Thirteenth Edition Vinitaly International Wine Competition
Staff Writer - February 3, 2005

Vinitaly 2005From March 29  to April 4, 2005, eighteen juries, including journalists and enologists from all over the world, will judge samples entered in the 13th International Wine Competition, organized as the inaugural event of the 39th Vinitaly, held in Verona from April 7 to the 11.

This is the major world competition in terms of the number of participants, so much so that, despite participation being limited to a maximum of five wines per producer in each category, the event is considered the "number one" by the International Federation of Major Wine Competitions. In addition, it is the most selective competition worldwide, since medals are awarded only to 3 percent of the participating wines, that is, just 88 medals for 3,500 wines.

Every stage in the competition is decidedly efficient, rational and transparent. Over the years, its precision and professionalism have earned praise from Italian and international observers. The 13th edition is once again supported by the Union Internationale des Oenologues (French International Association of Enologists), the Office Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin (International Vineyards and Wine Office), and the Italian Ministry for Agricultural and Forestry Policy, as well as by the Industry Ministry.

By regulation, the participating wines are divided into two main categories:

  1. wines with denomination of origin (DOC and DOCG), and
  2. other wines with geographical indication (IGT).

In turn, these two broader categories include several other sub-groups.

The evaluation method used is approved by the Union Internationale des Œnologues (International Union of Enologists), whereby judgments are expressed in hundredths.

The assessments will be made in several sessions involving 18 juries including upwards of 90 journalists and enologists from all over the world.

The top 12 wines in every category will be judged again by three different juries including 15 international experts. Those achieving the best scores will be awarded with the Grand Gold Medal, Gold Medal, Silver Medal and Bronze Medal. This is another unmatched feature by any other international competition.

The announcement of the winners will take place on April 6th, during the Opening Gala of the 39th Vinitaly at the Teatro Filarmonica, Verona.
