Siracusa, Sicily, Coldiretti Estimates Huge Damages

The cloudburst that hit the Siracusa province hard last Wednesday, September 17, caused enormous damage to the agricultural production in the area.

Coldiretti, the Italian Farmers' Association, says that it is a "major environmental disaster". The areas in the municipalities of Augusta, Melilli, Carlentini, Sortino, Palazzolo Acreide, Canicattini Bagni, Solarino and Avola, with its typical almond orchards, where among the most damaged. The farms in those areas have lost between 60 and 80 percent of thei product.

In Siracusa and Floridi, the almost 100 percent of tomato, eggplant and bell pepper production was lost.
