The South-Central semi-finals of Viniadi, which is, the wine Olympics, organized by Ente Vini, Enoteca italiana and Mipaf, will take place today, September 11, 2004, in Solopaca, in the Benevento province of Italy.

Thirty seven competitors, 11 of whom are women and 26 of whom are men from 24 to 57 years of age, coming from eleven Italian regions, meet in Solopaca to face off and qualify for the finals of the Wine Olympics.

The "wine athletes" must take a blind taste test. They must recognize the grapes and vintages of six different wines, then take a multiple choice, general wine culture test.

The winners will challenge the North Central finalists, who will be chosen in Lombardy in fall.

The overall winners will receive four grape vines, four wine experiences from three to seven days offered by prized Italian companies, and from 42 to 120 bottles of wine.
