September is gone, and with it, most of the harvest is over, and now the work at the wineries keeps winemakers busy worldwide.
Italy was blessed with a good harvest overall, with some areas actually raking in grapes of exceptional quality.
Among the articles below is one about the 30th Meeting per l'amicizia fra i popoli (Meeting for Friendship Among People), which took place in Rimini from the 23rd to the 29th of August and focused on the relation between what we eat and our well-being. Another interesting report is about the upcoming Artusi Award in nearby Forlimpopoli, which this year will honor Serge Latouche, the French economist and philosopher, theoretician of the 'untroubled degrowth.'
Also featured among others, are articles on the growing US wine consumption, an interesting report on the Chinese wine market by analyst, Yuebai Liu, and the touching "A Day at the Opera" by Italian journalist, Paolo Alciati.
As usual, in October my wife, Brigit, and I are taking a few days off for our birthdays for a personal "Sideways tour" during which we go scouting for wines in often lesser known US wine areas. This year we are going to Catalina Island, thus we'll drive through several well known California wine countries. Please, wish us a joyful and pleasant mini-vacation and look forward to sharing the experience with us when you read about our latest "island Sideways".

The increasing number of wine tasting events and shows in minor Chinese cities, such as Kunming, Chengdu and Tianjin, is a sign of how fast culture and knowledge of wine is spreading among Chinese consumers. It is not a secret that the Chinese market promises to become the source of consistent profits for foreign wine exporters and brokers, given the expectation that mainland China is poised to become the sixth largest wine consumer in the world.
