A historic year just ended, leaving the economy in disarray for 2009 and for the US president Elect, Barak Obama, to try and fix the best he can.

Economy notwithstanding, we hit the ground running by, participating in two important US trade shows with two of our Italian wine producers associated with our Italian Flavor Consortium: the Romangia Società Cooperativa, which will be at San Francisco's Fancy Food Show Winter from January 18th to the 20th, and Tenuta La Carlina, producer of the prize winning Brunello di Montalcino La Togata, which will be in San Francisco and New York with the Benvenuto Brunello tour organized by the Consortium of the Brunello di Montalcino. Then, in February, we are organizing the first ever Consolato DiVino, showcasing all wines, olive oil, and Centellino Areadivino wine accessories at the Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco.

As usual we have a wealth of articles for your pleasure, including three different Top 100 lists from the Wine Enthusiasts magazine, and a very interesting article about the US trade deficit and the state of the dollar by William Hummel. Also, despite the state of the world economy there's reason to celebrate for the Italian wine producers, as in 2008, for the first time in a decade, Italy surpassed France becoming the top wine producer in the world.

On this note, we wish you happy reading and a lovely 2009.

Loris Scagliarini, WineCountry.IT President

William HummelFor over three decades, the U.S. has consistently imported more than it has exported. That automatically increases foreign ownership of U.S. assets, both financial and real. Many view the trade deficit with alarm, and see it as diminishing the wealth of America. They also fear that someday the U.S. will be unable to pay off its debt to foreign interests, or that the exchange value of the dollar will collapse. A closer look will show that these fears are unrealistic.
