Italian Flavor Consortium: Italian Boutique Wines

The tenth Italian Flavor Forum, organized on Wednesday, November 12, 2008, at the Golden Gate Yacht Club of San Francisco, which was dedicated in particular to the Centellino Areadivino, was particularly satisfying. The positive outcome was in part due to the presence at the show of the owner and general manager of Table Top, the Tuscan company which created the Centellino Areadivino, as well as Joe Fiorino, managing partner of Fiorino Italian Imports, L.L.C., which distributes the Centellino in the US, with the exception of California, where WineCountry.IT distributes directly.

Afraid that we might get bored, we are already working at another event to be held in January at the Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco, thus, technically, the next trade show will be held on Italian territory.

In the meantime, we offer a variety of articles concerning Italian wine, food and lifestyle.

Virtually raising a stem glass filled with a delicious Italian sparkling wine to toast to the approaching 2009, WineCountry.IT editors whish happy holiday to all subscribers, who follow us month after month.

Story of a Friendship

Val di NotoIt's a winter night. Inside a wood and glass house by the sea, not far from Capo Passero, Sicily. Five friends, sitting around a table, watch the big waves swollen by the sirocco wind while lazily savoring a Nero d'Avola wine. Chatting quietly, the five friends let their minds wander, fantasizing about a wine which would be able to express the nature and culture of this corner of Trinacria (ancient name of Sicily). A wine which grasps and communicates the emotion which never fails to overcome the visitor who finds himself in this part of the island with open eyes and the open heart. This wine would narrate the complex beauty of this corner of land.

The Centellino, designed and produced in Italy by Table Top and imported to the US by WineCountry.IT L.L.C., opens the aroma and flavor of a wine while it pours into the glass, obtaining results comparable to letting the wine breath for a couple of hours in a regular decanter.

Beyond Wine

We continue the introduction of Italy's 155 Protected Designations of Origin (PDO, or, in Italian, DOP, Denominazione di Origine Protetta) and Protected Geographical Indications (PGI, or IGP in Italian, Indicazione Geografica Protetta) products. This month we return to cold cuts, of which Italy produces a fair variety. We have selected two products which use the same part of the pork, but are processed and seasoned according to local taste: the Pancetta di Calabria DOP from the extreme south of the Italian boot,

Pancetta di Calabria DOP

and the Pancetta Piacentina DOP from Emilia Romagna.
