Summer is upon us and the more self-conscious, (vain?) among us are struggling to get their waist line under control for those speedo and bikini days on the beach.
At WineCountry.IT we are proceeding as usual, though we are taking it a little easier, as we love this season and worship its bright, long days, which allow us to live in shorts, sandals and T-shirts.
We drink more white wines, fresh, ice-cold Prosecco, and lively Lambrusco, the Emilian frothy red from Modena and Reggio Emilia.
Talking about Prosecco, on Thursday the 28, the Consorzio di Tutela del Prosecco di Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOC (Consortium for the Protection of the Prosecco DOC from Conegliano and Valdobbiadene) brought their landmark Vino in Villa (Wine at the Villa) event to the world-famous Fairmont San Francisco hotel.
Daryl Corti, owner of Corti Brothers store in Sacramento, decided to stop selling wines over 14.5% alcohol, as some San Francisco restauranteurs started doing in 2006.
In Italy, summer activities are blooming everywhere and, among others, we suggest three events. Quelli che... il Freisa, sixth annual dedicated to this Piedmontese native wine which takes place in Roatto, in the province of Asti, on July 7. Vini Senza Confini: Un ponte verso l'estero (Wines Without Borders: A Bridge to the World), an important convention held at the Enoteca Italiana di Siena (Italian Enoteca in Siena), on July 11. And the totally informal Pignoletto Beach Party, wine tasting of this Emilian native variety held at Marina di Ravenna the 21st of July.
Italian researchers conducted a study which found that A Daily Glass of Wine Could Boost Memory. So, as you see, it's not all playing back on the Italian boot, some serious dudes are actually working hard to make us feel better while we enjoy ourselves in moderation.
Enjoy your reading, I'm going to pour myself a flute of that delicious prize-winning Malibrán Prosecco. Cheers!

Italian Native Vines |
With the Friuli Venezia Giulia installment Rosa D'Ancona completes the instructive journey across the Italian wine regions to discover all the major native and ancient vines. As noted at the beginning of this virtual tour, Italy accounts for the largest number of native vines in the world, confirming what the ancient Greeks found out long ago, when, upon conquering the southern part of the Italian boot, renamed that blessed land Enotria, or the Land of Wine.
Another surprising piece of information, which shows just how embedded vitiviniculture is in the social structure and culture of Italy, is the fact that this peninsula, with an area approximately 70% that of California, counts over 45,000 wine producing estates, many of which are small, family-run businesses, which have been handed down from generation to generation for centuries.
