This month, that brings about the brilliant colors that each year set the Italian vineyards ablaze, we travel to Tuscany to visit the current Company of the Month, Ridolfi – I Mercatali.

It's a new estate in the Montalcino area which, in September 2005, bottled its first Rosso di Montalcino wine from the 2003 harvest, for the US market. Professor Mauro Ridolfi, owner and manager of the winery and the vineyards, paired with enologist and agronomist Luca D'Attoma to produce this great Rosso and the noble Brunello di Montalcino, which will be released for the first time in three years, that is, in 2008.

Italian singer-songwriter from Bologna, Francesco Guccini expressed in lyrics his affection for October the month that wraps its days in warm colors, but whose nights are getting cooler as they end days that are getting shorter and shorter.
"I don't know if everyone understands your great beauty, October,
As inside your big bellied vats you're ripening must and preparing thrill (inebriation) ..."
Let's see what five-course menu Chef Davide Dalloco, from the Scuola Alberghiera di Serramazzoni, has prepared for this month whose air is filled with the smell of fermenting must.

- Borlenghi (Kind of flat, thin, seasoned bread)
- Tortellacci di ricotta e porcini (Tortellacci (stuffed pasta) with Ricotta cheese and porcini mushrooms) – see recipe
- Trippa alla Parmigiana (Tripe Parmesan-Style ) – see recipe
- Crostata di frutti di bosco (Wild berry pie)
- Caciotta e primosale con marmellata di pomodori verdi (Caciotta and primosale cheeses with green tomato jam)
Buon Appetito!

Just a few days before the Italian Flavor Forum II, the informative Italian wine and food day at the Golden Gate Yacht Club of San Francisco, California. We are excited and busy taking care of the final details. Wine and food professionals, please remember that participation is by invitation only. For last minutes request, please use this e-mail.
Among the articles, read the first part of my own personal 'Sideways' trip with wife and cat to the Central Coast ending, as Miles and Jack's did, in Paso Robles. The whole mini-trip was exciting and informative.
In addition to the third part of the article about the new European denominations and the concept of protection of the place of origin, we also published the results of a Nomisma Research which finds the Italian grappa market in good shape, and various articles about enogastronomic events going on in various parts of Italy, to celebrate the end of the harvest and the arrival of Fall.
Finally, you'll find the results of the Eighth Barolo Auction, which took place at the Gagliardo winery in La Morra, Piedmont.
The whole staff at WineCountry.IT wishes the best to producers and buyers participating in the Italian Flavor Forum II. Enjoy the event and establish good business relationships.
Loris Scagliarini,
President

Our Own 'Sideways' Trip – First of Four Parts
|
| |
My wife's birthday and mine are just five days apart and to celebrate, we love to take a few days off on our own, going on short road trips or soaking in one of the hot springs in nearby Napa or Lake counties. This year, following what appears to be a new California trend, we decided to take our own Sideways trip through some of the lesser known, up-and-coming wine countries.

New Appointment for Italian Wineries
|
| |
The celebration of this type of extremely young wine which, because of its freshness and easy drinkability appears to be a favorite with the younger adults, was launched last year by Movimento Turismo del Vino (Movement for Wine Tourism), the organization that in the past started great eno-tourism events that are rapidly becoming part of the Italian way of life, such as the 'Cantine Aperte' (Open Wineries) weekends.

A Look at the European Union – Part 3 of 3
|
| |
Among the trends that are gaining ground both in Europe and the US, are the growing demand for healthful food products, the increased sales of ready-to-eat meals and huge request for natural waters and healthful drinks. Europe, on the other hand, is generally experiencing a decrease in wine and an increased sale of ready-to-eat meals, a fact that seems to indicate that European youths are not following in their parents’ traditions, opting instead for a more global (should we say American?) way of life.

I Piatti della Bilancia (The Dishes of the Scale)
|

Going from restaurant to restaurant, eating either lunch, dinner or both: from October 1 to 31, 2005, select restaurants in Campogalliano, the Italian town in province of Modena that hosts the one and only Museo della Bilancia, or the Scale Museum, offers 25-Euro fixed price meals including drinks and espresso coffee, presenting food creations dedicated to the scale.
