Italian Native Vines
|
This Italian region has been well
known for the quality of the local grapes and wines since time
immemorial, so much so that in Ancient Greece they were awarded as
prizes to the Olympic winners. This is the region that was first called
Enotria,
or 'Land of Wine', the name that ultimately defined Italy for the
Ancient Greeks.

We are talking about Calabria, the
area whose viticulture and winemaking traditions are interwoven with
the region's own history, which have been this way for thousands of
years.

September is the month
that brings Italians back to their daily routine after the welcome
relief and excitement of the summer vacations. It's a month dedicated
to memories and harvest, when our favorite fruit, the grape, begins its
gradual transformation that will make it into wine.

This month however, we have chosen to
honor the Caffè
del Principe s.r.l. from Genoa, a company dedicated to
marketing extremely high quality coffee, toasting the carefully
selected beans exclusively by request, so as to provide a product that
is always fresh and of top quality.

Ss the kids are getting ready to go back to school, several weeks later than their US counterparts, ho by the end of August were already back in the classroom, let's see what five-course menu Chef Davide Dalloco, of the Scuola Alberghiera di Serramazzoni, has come up with for this season.

Buon Appetito!

Welcome to Volume III, Number 13 of Wine News, the e-Letter from the WineCountry.IT network. (Would you rather see the e-Letter on your favorite browser? Use this link. Usa il link seguente se vuoi leggere le News in italiano).
Wow people, what a second half of August!
About a week before the tragic landing of Katrina, arguably the strongest hurricane to ever have hit the US coast, we had our own company tragedy. The web server that hosted our WineCountry.IT network of sites dedicated to Italian wines and food, finally crashed completely after a few, sputtering days during which it went out a few times.
We quickly moved the sites over to a new server and in about 24 hours, we were online again, but we want to apologize to our users worldwide who tried to connect during the time we were down. Debugging and completing the transfer of all the files took us a lot longer than expected, thus the delay in sending out the September 1, 2005 issue of the e-Letter.
Check out the Part II of the San Colombano al Lambro DOC article by sommelier/writer Paride Leali, Part II of the article about the Napa, California meeting in defense of the place of origin of great wines, and Part III of the Gallup's measurement of Americans' drinking preferences, which highlights the trends in drinking by gender.
We are also pleased to confirm the next Italian Flavor Forum event, at the Golden Gate Yacht Club in San Francisco, California, on Wednesday, October the 19th.
In the meantime, the Italian Wine Labels virtual gallery site has grown to over 930 original labels, so we might reach the 1,000-piece mark ahead of schedule. We are working hard at tasting and discovering a wealth of new, little-known, unusual and delectable, excellent Italian wines.
The whole staff at WineCountry.IT wishes the best to all people affected by the deadly hurricane Katrina. Our hearts go out to you.

President |

| Recognizing Wine's Taste of Place – First of Five Parts |
| |
One of wine's finest attributes is that it can taste of the place where the grapes were grown.
This taste is found in the minerality of a lean, lemony Chablis made from Chardonnay grapes grown in limestone soils in northern Burgundy. It's in the smoky, meaty notes of a Syrah from the Cote Rotie ("roasted slopes") in France's Rhone Valley. It's in the pungently herbal character of a Sauvignon Blanc made in New Zealand's cool, marine-influenced Marlborough region.

These places have deep historic and cultural roots that
reach back hundreds of years to feudal civilizations. Wine has been
produced since time immemorial, when the names were first given to the
grapes and cultivated, out of love for the fruits of the earth and fed
by the sweat of the local agricultural workers.

| U.S.,
Europe Negotiate
Use of Names Like Port |
| |
While the
United States is not even close to considering the legal phase-out of
semi-generic place names such as "Port" on wine labels, U.S. and
European negotiators are hard at work on what could amount to a broad
agreement not to allow new uses.
