August is the Italian month dedicated to the summer vacation. Don't try to get any serious work done this month, but rather enjoy, especially on the 15th, the holy of holiest, cities like Rome or Milan, bustling with life and people all year long, suddenly deserted, but for a few, smart human beings who have chosen to enjoy the majestic piazzas and empty streets.
For a leisurely summer repast, Chef Davide Dalloco of the Scuola Alberghiera di Serramazzoni, proposes the following five-course menu.

- Culatello [kind of Italian salami] with white rosemary pizza and melon balls
- Pumpkin Tortelli [Stuffed Pasta] with Butter and Fried Sage – see recipe
- Olive Hodgepodge – see recipe)
- Rice Patty
- Whipped Ricotta Cheese with Caramelized Melon
Buon Appetito!

Welcome to Volume III, Number 12 of Wine News, the e-Letter from the WineCountry.IT network. (Would you rather see the e-Letter on your favorite browser? Use this link. Usa il link seguente se vuoi leggere le News in italiano).
In this installment of the Italian Native Vine column you'll find all the native and ancient vines of Sardinia, as well as a list of outstanding regional producers.
With this issue we are also introducing a new associate to our network, Sommelier AIS Paride Leali, who started his collaboration by presenting us with an in-depth look at a small DOC from Lombardy, the San Colombano al Lambro, which is the only DOC produced in the province of Milan.
In addition, we are publishing the second part of the Gallup's measurement of Americans' drinking preferences, which highlights the trends in drinking by age.
There are also a couple of articles related to the various states' dance around the recent Supreme Court Decision that calls for equal treatment to in- and out-of-state wine producers and distributors.
We have also added some new wine labels as well and are now aiming to have over 1,000 Italian Wine Labels in our virtual gallery online by the end of the year. To do this we are making a sacrifice and sampling a whole lot of excellent Italian wines.
From the whole WineCountry.IT staff, happy reading, and enjoy the summer with cool, crisp summer wines.

| Lagrein – Finding a New Winegrape Variety for Australian Vineyards |
| |
About 20 years ago I planted a small vineyard in my backyard in Kyneton, Victoria. At the time all the local growers were planting Cabernet. I thought that the area was a bit cool for that variety and thought I'd try Merlot instead. The literature of the time seemed to be suggesting that Merlot ripened a bit earlier and gave softer, fruitier wines. So I planted Merlot.
