The July 2005 Company of the Month is an olive oil producing farm from Ascoli Satriano, in the southern Apulia region, or the heel of the Italian boot: the Azienda Agricola Masseriola.

It is not the usual kind of company featured in this column, but as extra virgin olive oil is one of the main staples of the healthful Mediterranean diet, we decided to start giving space also to producers who specialize exclusively in the production of outstanding, high quality, olive oil from the various Italian regions.

Welcome to Volume III, Number 10 of Wine News, the e-Letter from the WineCountry.IT network. (Would you rather see the e-Letter on your favorite browser? Use this link. Usa il link seguente se vuoi leggere le News in italiano).
Rosa D'Ancona continues her journey across the vitigni autoctoni italiani' (Italian Native Vines) and with the latest installment she introduces us all to the Sicilian native grapes, lists all the regional IGT (Tipical Geographic Indication) wines, and presents a selection of outstanding regional wineries.
Despite the summer heat, we are going forward preparing the next Italian Flavor Forum event, scheduled for October, when the San Francisco weather is just perfect. I suggest reading the article 'The Taste of Italy' that I wrote out of delight at Matt Kramer's highlighted the quality and value
of Italian wines and commented upon
their sporadic availability. Here is where the Italian Flavor Forum comes into play, making it easy for importers, distributors, restauranteurs and other professionals to discover, taste and purchase such Italian gems.
In addition, the Forums introduce exceptional extra virgin olive oils, traditional balsamic vinegar from Modena (delicious on ice cream or with fresh strawberries), and other Italian regional specialties.
We all at WineCountry.IT wish you pleasant reading, a funfilled summer, and joyful toasts with quality, crisp summer wines.
Loris Scagliarini,

The Taste of Italy

"Italian wines are a peculiar joy - and frustration - for wine writers. On the one hand, they are a marvel in today's increasingly homogenized marketplace. Where Australia and California, at least at the large-scale commercial level, are hurtling toward ever larger productions of everless distinctive wines, Italy is a stronghold of wine individuality. You get grapes no one else grows, offered by producers even the folks on the next hilltop town haven't heard of."

Italian Foreign Trade Boosted by Wine

The number of Italian bottles of wine exported worldwide increased 11% in 2005.
"This is a positive result for national wine production, two-thirds of which was destined to EU countries – mostly to Germany, which remains the main European market – while about one third of Italian wine destined for export is consumed outside the EU, mostly in the United States, where so far, Italian wine is beating Australian and French wines in 2005," said Coldiretti.
