Wine News - June 16, 2005 |
|
To find the Company of the Month for June 2005 we move to Montalcino, that corner of Tuscany that produces arguably the best known Tuscan red wine, the Brunello di Montalcino. Here we find the Azienda Agraria "la Pescaia" owned by the Di Donato brothers.

Aniceto, Roberto, Vittorio and Enzo, the four Di Donato brothers personally oversee the winemaking and bottling of their Brunello, Rosso di Montalcino and Oricalco, an excellent red IGT Toscana wine. In addition to wines, "La Pescaia" produces Grappa di Brunello liquor, extra virgin olive oil and an exclusive new product, the gelatina di Brunello, a ruby red jelly condiment made with Brunello di Montalcino wine. Recently introduced to the US at the Premiere of the Italian Flavor Forum, the educational market event held on May 25th in California, these products enjoyed great success, especially the grappa and the gelatina di Brunello di Montalcino.

Good news for all Italian wine lovers and people interested in knowing more about wine in general. To maintain our promise to inform the international markets about Italian wines, we have just launched a new column by Rosa D'Ancona dedicated to the 350 or so Italian native vines that are used to produce outstanding regional wines.
Published in Italian-Flavor.com, the 'Vitigni Autoctoni (Italian Native Vines)' column will introduce all the Italian registered native vines, region by region, starting from Rosa's native Sicily. From well known grapes such as the Sangiovese, found in many regions, to the never-heard-of such as the Sagrantino di Montefalco, found in just a small area of the Umbria region, you will be informed.
You may want to read my presentation, but you definitely shouldn't miss the introduction by Ms. D'Ancona.
Other interesting articles include the one about a recent study on the Clarification of Wines Using Polysaccharides Extracted from Seaweeds, and one about an ACNielsen survey that found that US consumers are drinking more expensive wines.
We also published the part one of two two-part articles: one about unusual wines of exceptional quality, and one about a curious 20-day Mediterranean journey in a quest for exotic wines from ancient regions by a group of US wine buffs.
In the hope that everybody enjoys our current article, we wish you all pleasant summer reading and inspirational toasts with quality wines.
Loris Scagliarini,
President |

Sunlight plays over the gently moving water around the medieval village of Ston on Croatia's Peljesac peninsula, north of Dubrovnik. Villa Coruna, a small country restaurant, is perches above the bay, within sight of nearby oyster beds.
But is the wine that is memorable – it is crisp, cellar-cool, scented with wild thyme and lemon, pale, cloudy and delicious.

Italian Native Vines: A patrimony to Safeguard and Enjoy |

It has been thanks to a few brave, adventurous, farsighted vintners and winemakers in love with the land and its fruits that, during the last ten years or so, a large number of Italian ancient native vines, once believed extinct, or close to extinction, were brought back to life and, once again, made into wine as it was made by their ancestors.
