The Company of the Month for February 2005 is the Azienda Agricola Betti, a Tuscan family-run commercial farm established at the beginning of 20th century that produces quality wines and premium olive oil. Of the about 60 hectares (just shy of 150 acres) of property, 15 (about 37 acres) are dedicated to vineyards and 3.5 (about 8;65 acres) to the olive groves.

The property, located at 150 to 200 meters above sea level (about 492 to 656 feet), has been passed down from father to son since the late 1800's, to the current owners, Paolo Betti and his sons, Guido and Gherardo.

The Importance of International Trade Shows |
| |
As the traditional "Winter Fancy Food Show 2005" was going on at the Moscone Center of San Francisco, from January 23 to 25, 2005, just a few block away, in a suite at the Hilton Hotel on O'Farrell street, the "Workshop 2005 – Project: Internationalization Mission to U. S. A." was taking place. Here, the Italian region of Sicily presented 15 local enterprises, including among others, producers of wine, olive oil, pastries and other specialty products.
WineCountry.IT president, Loris Scagliarini, explains why this is a good thing.

China Opens Its Market to the Primitivo Wine by Soloperto |
| |
The Primitivo di Manduria Doc made by the Cantine Soloperto is conquering the Far East.
After tasting some Soloperto wines while visiting Milan, the Chinese Delegation decided to visit the winery in Manduria, to see first hand the technology applied in the vineyards and during the winemaking process. They finally decided to order two Primitivo labels: the "Patriarca" and the "Rubinum", both upscale, high quality wines, produced and bottled with the most demanding wine drinkers in mind.

Brunello di Montalcino: Sales Are Up in Northern Europe |
| |
The Brunello di Montalcino knows no crisis: if the exportation of Italian wine is stagnating, Brunello sales held on well in 2004, with 5.7 million bottles sold.
Sales were consolidated in the reference market, the US, but actually went up in northern European countries such as Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland.

Botrytis Breakthrough |
| |
A breakthrough botrytis fungicide which leaves no residue, has no withholding period and is Bio Gro approved. It sounds too good to be true, but it's not.
Even better, three years of trial and evaluation show Sentinel has every indication of being as robust as conventional chemistry in protecting grapes from botrytis.

Sleuthing Out What's In Wine (Part three of four) |
| |
Like all food products, wine can be made without preservatives. But while the idea is appealing, the reality is a problem for a product that people routinely store for a decade or more before consuming. Without sulfites -- the most common wine preservative -- many wines would spoil before ever reaching your local wine shop.

Many 2002 Selections Deserve Notice - Italians Flaunt Vine Art |
| |
It is a tough sell for Italian producers who are faced with an off-vintage (2002). But it's unfair to paint the entire vintage with one brush. There is plenty of wine from 2002 that deserves our attention. The article introduces just a few from some of my favorite wineries (and there are many more that are well above average).

The Tale of a Prince's Secret Wines |
| |
The oldest, a 1978, was dry and fresh, with aromas of flowers, honey and minerals. The flavors seemed to linger in the mouth forever. The wine in the other glasses was Sémillon, the backbone of great white Bordeaux but practically nonexistent in Italy. Yet these wines were even more astounding than the Malvasias. The oldest, a 1971, had the lively mineral flavor of a fine Puligny-Montrachet.
