The Truth About Sulfites – Chemical Lies in Wine (Second of Two Parts) |

Given the long history of sulfite additions to wine and many other food products, where did the health warning come from? Approximately 0.25 percent of North Americans have serious sulfite allergies, including one unfortunate man who is reported to have died after eating at a salad bar where the salad was sprayed with a 2000ppm "keep fresh" sulfite solution that was commonly used in the 1970s (remember, bottled wine typically contains 100 times less than this amount).

Coppola's career as a vintner, begun nearly 30 years ago, has been well documented. With wife Eleanor, he bought the ravaged remains of one of the Napa Valley's great wine properties, the Inglenook Estate, and restored it as the Niebaum-Coppola Estate, incorporating the name of Inglenook founder Gustave Niebaum.

Although you'd never know it from the tone of the debate, sulfites are actually an organic compound that nature uses to prevent microbial growth. They are found in grapes, onions, garlic and many other growing plants.

For the past 15 years, immigrants from Islamic countries as diverse as Albania, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Pakistan, and Egypt have flocked to Italy, attracted by money and opportunity. The country's Muslim population is well below the estimated 5 million in France, 3.5 million in Germany, and 1.5 million in Britain, but it far outstrips the size of its Jewish and Protestant communities.

These special Italian wines come from Sicily, a place synonymous with the Mafia, thanks in part to the Godfather film trilogy. Fortunately, the island has more to offer than the Mafia, and it is the indigenous grapes that are great for wines.

Consumer Trends: More Wine Less Beer |

Thus far this year Italian families have increased their spending on wines and champagnes (+2.6 percent) and decreased it on beer (-4 percent).
Also of note is the 8.3 percent slump in spending on mineral waters.

Second Annual "Chocolate and Almond Crunch Games" October 7-10, 2004 |

Following last year's annual huge success, when thousands of visitors literally invaded the event, the organizers, Marisa Tognarelli, the association 'Sestola OK', the Sestola and the Modena Administrations are eager to repeat the experience.
