SulfitesGiven the long history of sulfite additions to wine and many other food products, where did the health warning come from? Approximately 0.25 percent of North Americans have serious sulfite allergies, including one unfortunate man who is reported to have died after eating at a salad bar where the salad was sprayed with a 2000ppm "keep fresh" sulfite solution that was commonly used in the 1970s (remember, bottled wine typically contains 100 times less than this amount).

The "Castello Spagnolo Wine Award" awarded to the Primitivo di Manduria DOC "Patriarca" wine from the Cantine Soloperto

 

Primitivo di Manduria DOC "Patriarca"The distinctive metal-looking label of the 1997 Primitivo di Manduria Doc "Patriarca" wine from the Cantine Soloperto, won the first annual "Castello Spagnolo Wine Award", or "Spanish Castle Wine Award". The award is assigned to wines produced in the Apulia wine region and the jury includes mostly journalists. The label was chosen among the 400 entries presented by the various regional winemakers.

Good Year for Valdobbiadene Prosecco, Exports Rise

 

Prosecco Drusian SpumanteThis should be good year for the Valdobbiadene Prosecco wine, one of Italy's most exported wines.

The production of grapes is expected to increase by 15 percent, reaching about 3,620 tons in Treviso (1,360 tons red and 2,260 tons white).

Consumer Trends: More Wine Less Beer

 

More Wine Less BeerThus far this year Italian families have increased their spending on wines and champagnes (+2.6 percent) and decreased it on beer (-4 percent).

Also of note is the 8.3 percent slump in spending on mineral waters.

Italian Sparkling Wine Grows More than Champagne in the U S
