Comenius
Comenius, philosopher, pedagogue,
and vintner / wine producer

The wine IOHAN-AMOS COMENIVS MORAUVS takes its prestigious name from Comenius, one of the greatest teachers of all time. He lived in Moravia, which is now part of the Czech Republic, in the 17th century. He was very proud of a wine-producing estate that he owned there, and whose vineyards are still alive and well today. In fact, the IOHAN-AMOS COMENIVS MORAUVS white and red wines are made with the grapes produced by those vines.

The Italian group Arcimboldo Global Communications, has devised a project to promote and re-enhance the ancient Moravian vine growing tradition, highlighting the link with Comenius' relevant phylosophy. Comenius has been defined by UNESCO as an "apostle of the world comprehension" and honored with the institution of the Comenius Medal, one of UNESCO’s most prestigious awards honoring outstanding achievements in the fields of education, research, and innovation. In fact, the pedagogical legacy of the great Moravian thinker is to "offer knowledge and education to all, so that it contributes to peace among people". Bearing this in mind, the promotion of the IOHAN-AMOS COMENIVS MORAUVS, Comenii Vinum, (Comenius' Wine, in Latin) becomes a symbolic promotional message for the peaceful world cohabitation among nations

The Arcimboldo Global Communications project propose the series of events described below.

On the occasion of the Monte Carlo Wine Festival 2008 one stump of Comenius vine taken from the original vineyards in Moravia, will be transplanted in the Principality of Monaco, thus symbolizing the proliferation of the moral value of this great man.

At a later time, a Comenius Vineyard will be established, transplanting original stumps imported from Moravia, in a splendid 3,000 square meter (over 32,000 square feet) area facing the Mediterranean of the Cote D'Azur. The property is located in the village of Les Granges de St. Paul, nearby the small French town of Menton.

Comenii Vinum

This will be but the first Comenius Vineyard, and will be followed by many more around the world. Each Comenii Vinum IOHAN-AMOS COMENIVS MORAUVS produced by the new vineyards will acquire unique characteristics from the soil of the hosting country. To further promote Comenius philosophy, the group has planned educational courses in enology, gastronomy, and tourist/hotel service sectors.

Arcimboldo Global Communications extends an invitation to private citizens and institutions alike to create communal projects informed by Comenius' idea of ethical economy.

During the inauguration of the MCWF, a Czech delegation including the Vice Minister of Culture, Dr. Antonín Tesařík, and Dr. Karel Muzikář, President of the Pan European Cultural Association 'Comenius', will symbolically entrust to the Cote D'Azur a stump of vine from Blatnice, home of Comenius' vines.

It's a message of peace and universal understanding channeled though the grape vine plant. The 'Comenius Vine' project plans more symbolic transplants around the world, and the production of various Comenii Vinum linked to the educational training of young enology students.
