Assovini Sicilia Brings the Associates' Wines to the Russia
Rosa D'Ancona - October 9, 2007

Assovini SiciliaFrom October 9, to 11, 2007, the Sicilian wine sector will be the protagonist of the event "Sicily, The Wine Island", held in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The event is organized by the Regional Council for Agriculture and Forestry, in collaboration with the Palermo, Moscow and St. Petersburg chapters of the Istituto per il Commercio Estero (ICE, or Foreign Trade Institute).

The importance of promoting Sicilian wines in a growing market such as that of Russia, is fully understood by the Assovini Sicilia, the winemakers' association which includes 69 of the major producers from the island region. The development department of the association will coordinate the participation in the promotional event of 13 members' estates. The number of the participants was dictated by import rules, which only allowed the participation of wineries who already have a Russian importer.

The participating estates are Abbazia Santa Anastasia, Benanti, Cantine Barbera, Cantine Rallo, Calatrasi, Donnafugata, Feudo Arancio, Firriato, Museum, Planeta, Tasca d'Almerita,Valle dell'Acate, and Zisola.

The main objective of the promotional tour is to promote Sicilian enology, and to communicate the unique charactere of the island's wines and its status as "Wine Island" across the cultural divide. Thanks to the synergy between the local terroir and the committed producers on the island, this region managed to carve out an enviable spot for itself in the international wine market. The goal is to increase knowledge and appreciation of the regional wine production among Russian consumers, who already favor Italian products in general. The first few months of 2007 have shown a value growth of wine export to Russia of 81%, or 500% in volume.

The two locations chosen for these promotional outings are the prestigious Gum department store in Moscow's Red Square, and the upscale Hotel Astoria in St. Petersburg. Over 350 Russian wine professionals, selected by the importers of the participating estates among trade journalists, restauranteurs, wine bar managers and store buyers, have been invited. The event includes workshops and B2B tasting in both locations. The opening address by the regional agriculture councilor, Giovanni La Via, local ICE representatives and the Assovini Sicilia president, Count Lucio Tasca d'Almerita, is followed by a seminar about Sicilian vitiviniculture, moderated by well known Italian trade journalist, Andrea Gabbrielli. At the following tastings, over 80 wines will be poured, including white, red and dessert wines, thus representing the full spectrum of the island's wine production.
