Pinot Noir Wins Big at L.A. County Fair Wine Competition

 The popularity of Pinot Noir continues as Cambria Winery took top honors at the 66th annual L.A. County Fair 'Wines of the World' competition. Cambria Winery, Pinot Noir, Bench Break Vineyard, Santa Maria Valley, 2001 took the best wine of the competition award from 3,936 domestic and international entries from 1,003 wineries.
Rideau Vineyard, Roussanne, In Circle Cellar Club, 2004 took the best white wine division.
The nod for best limited production wine of the competition was for Domaine Alfred, Pinot Noir, Chamisal Vineyard, Edna Valley, 2002.
Best sparkling wine went to Italian Cantina Malibran, with Gorio, Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOC Spumante Extra Dry 2004. Best rosé went to St. James, Pink Catawba, Missouri and best late harvest wine was Bonny Doon Vineyards, Vin de Glaciere, California, 2004. Best dessert wine went to Rancho de Philo, Triple Cream Sherry, Rancho Cucamonga.
In the Olive Oils of the World competition, best extra virgin olive oil – domestic went to Salton Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Frantoio, Leccino, Pendolino, Maurino, Moraiolo, Sonoma. Best international was awarded to Villa Zottopera, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Italian Classic Blends, Baronessa Ignazia, Italy. Best flavored was given to The Olive Press, Clementine, California. There were 364 oils entered in the competition by 241 producers.
The olive oil and wine competitions were held May 10-13 at Fairplex in Pomona, home to the L. A. County Fair.x Medal winners will be available for the public to taste in The Vineyard during the Fair, Sept. 9 – Oct. 2, closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
