Sestola, Modena – The first edition of Giochi di Cioccolato e Croccante,or "Chocolate and Almond Crunch Games", was more successful than the organizers had forecast. The event was thought up by Marisa Tognarelli and backed by the Provincia di Modena (Modena Province Administration), the Comune di Sestola (Sestola City Hall) and the Associazione ‘Nuova Sestola OK’ ('New Sestola OK' Association).
Friday, October 10, 2003, at the enoteca (wine bar) “La Taverna”, the event within the event titled Rhum e Cioccolato (Rhum and Chocolate) was sold out.
Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 October, the show moved out into the open air for the event titled La Piazza si Anima di Sapori (The Piazza Comes Alive with Flavors), which attracted thousands of enogastronomy tourists wishing to watch pastry chefs create delicious chocolates and other high quality sweet temptations right before their eyes.
Saturday's Gala Dinner at the Albergo-Ristorante (Hotel-restaurant) “Al Poggio”, featuring a menu based on chocolate, Porcino mushrooms and Modena's traditional balsamic vinegar, was sold out as well.
The real stars of the event were nationally famous pastry chefs Marisa Tognarelli, Valter Tagliazucchi, Alessandro Pasquini, Gian Piero Piccagliani, Tiziano Busuoli, Maria Pia Polacchini and the Ota brothers. The Master of Ceremony was Danilo Freguja, who was elected Champion of Culinary Art in 1994.
The surprising success of the event challenged the well-prepared chefs, who had to work very hard to satisfy the unstoppable requests of the enthusiastic sweet-toothed public, but convinced the organizers to start thinking immediately about the 2004 edition.
