| Oriolo dei Fichi: Panorama and Tower | |
Romagna, especially in its hilly part, toward the Apennines, is a particularly good place to grow grapes, from which the local winemakers make the much appreciated which are highly touted by the various Italian wine guides.
One very special place, located atop the hills of the Ravenna province, near the town of Faenza, is the Oriolo hamlet where, in the middle of a century-old park, stands a powerful, grandiose, fifteenth century fortified tower. This tower, with its hexagonal base is called "a doppio puntone" and is unique in Italy.
The Associazione per la Torre di Oriolo (Oriolo Tower Association) was founded to promote, add value and attract tourism to this area, in particular to its traditions as well as to its wine and food products.
During springtime and throughout the summer, the park and its tower become the base for important local events, starting with the Sagra dei Vini (Wine Festival), opening on Sunday, April 24. The event offers the public the opportunity to taste wines and other typical products, made by local wineries, farms and artisans.
During the festival, participants may taste fruits, honey, extra virgin olive oil, piadina and other regional delicacies prepared according to ancient rural traditions, and adhere to the latest regulations for organic agriculture.
The star of the day, however, will be the wine.
In addition to the traditional Romagna grapes, such as Sangiovese, Albana and Trebbiano, on the rolling slopes of the hills surrounding Oriolo, vintners successfully grow Sauvignon, Malvasia, Cabernet, Merlot and other grapes, originally native of the Veneto region that found in Romagna a new, fertile home.
Educational tours to wineries, agriturismos and restaurants affiliated with the Oriolo Tower Association are available upon request.
Starting June 22nd, every Wednesday until August the 3rd, the show Oriolo di Sera (Oriolo at Night), featuring music and wine tasting, takes place.
