At the twenty fourth Banco d'Assaggio (Wine Tasting Competition), held recently in Torgiano, Umbria, the cooperative winery from Soave, in Verona province, had great success with three of its wines: the Spumante Metodo Classico Riserva Brut "Equipe 5", the IGT Delle Venezie Rosso "Fulvo Rocca Sveva" 1999, and the Amarone della Valpolicella "Rocca Sveva" 1998. The Cantina di Soave received more awards than any other from the Verona/Valpolicella area. In addition, this is a confirmation for the Amarone della Valpolicella "Rocca Sveva", that won the gold medal last year as well, with the 1997 vintage.
This year, 591 wines from 227 wineries coming from 19 Italian regions participated in the historic wine competition, that was organized as usual by the Assoenologi (Italian Association of Enologists). Prizes were awarded to 52 wineries.
Unlike other similar competitions, Torgiano's Banco d'Assaggio does not reward all the wines that score a given number of points. Among all wines that have scored over 80 points, the top five for each category accepted are selected and assigned an even score. Another difference in the Torgianos contest is the type of evaluation. Off course, all the wines are anonymous. For each, the judges are told the type (as in white, red, passito, rosé, spumante, and so on), the category (DOC, DOCG, IGT), and the vintage. The production area is not taken into consideration.
