Wine producers continue to sign up for the 12th Selection of Tuscan Wines, the only wine competition in the world which, starting this year, will evaluate wines which have not yet been released to the market. The deadline for signing up is October 10, 2010.

The prestigious event is organized by Toscana Promozione (Tuscan Promotion) in collaboration with the Enoteca Italiana di Siena (Siena's Italian Wine Bar), the Associazione Enologi Enotecnici Italiani (Italian Association of Enologists and Enotechnicians), the provincial administrations, the consortiums for the protection of the various denominations, the chambers of commerce, and the ICE (Istituto per il Commercio Estero, or Italian Institute for International Commerce). The goal is to select the best regional wines to showcase in a promotional and educational world tour which will introduce the excellent products from this region abroad. In addition, the wine list which will result from the competition, and authorized by the Italian Agriculture Ministry, will be featured in multimedia consultation tolls, namely a dedicated web site and printed guide, which will be made available to the sector professionals.
"Wine is a true flag product for Tuscany," said Stefano Giovannelli, director of Toscana Promozione. "For the producers it represents an extra opportunity to showcase their product and generate commercial contacts. The selected wines will become part of a promotional program which lasts two years, and has the objective of developing new contacts with distribution chains as well as the HoReCa (Hotel, Restaurant, Catering) sector."
The main news of the 2010 competition is that it will take place in November rather than October, to allow for the introduction of two new categories dedicated to red DOP wines which will be released to the market on January 1st, 2011, and will be at the beginning of their 'commercial life' when the world tour takes off.
In order to avoid affecting the market, the results for the two new categories will be released only after January 10, 2011, that is, after the wines have hit the store shelves.
The wines will be evaluated by 10 seven-member commissions of enologists, sommeliers, and trade journalists, applying the Union Internationale des Oenologues method. The minimum score to make the 2010 list is 82/100, and the wines which score 85/100 or more will receive Honorable Mentions. In addition, the top five wines in each category will be awarded an Honorary Diploma.
