There are great expectations for the third annual competition Mondial du Merlot, which will take place again in Lugano, Switzerland, from November 12 to 14, 2010. In just three years this competition has obtained recognition at an international level. It has become one of the appointments on the world calendar of enological contests, generating wide interest among producers and consumers of this appreciated international wine variety.
The contest is organized by ISICOM SA from Lugano, Switzerland, in collaboration with VINEA from Sierre, Switzerland, who have been at the forefront for the logistic and information technology for international competitions. Supported by UNIVERRE ProUVA and the City of Lugano, the 'Mondial du Merlot' has become one of the 12 contests included in VINOFED (Féderation Mondiale des Grands Concours de Vins et Spiritueux, or World Federation of Great Competitions of Wines and Spirits). In addition, the 'Mondial du Merlot' is sponsored by the OIV (Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin, or International Organization of Vineyards and Wine), UIOE (Union internationale des Oenologues, or International Union of Enologists) and USOE (Union Suisse des Oenologues, or Union of Swiss Enologists).
The objective of the competition is to increase the perceived value of the Merlot, a vine variety which, thanks to its characteristics, has been able to adapt to the diverse terroirs and climates of the world regions where it is cultivated. The prizes awarded during the two previous contests, including the Great Gold Medal awarded to the Slovenian wine 'Capris Merlot, Primorska, 2005', as well as the wide geographical range from where the competing samples come, have highlighted the elegance, nobility and taste-olfactory fullness of the wines made with this varietal.

In order to offer producers more opportunities to compete on a level playing field, the organizers have established three categories: Merlot Varietal (minimum 85% Merlot), Old Vintages (wines produced before 2005 with a minimum 85% Merlot), and Merlot Blend (minimum 51% Merlot ). The international jury which will choose the winners includes enologists, media professionals and sommeliers.
The announcement of the winners and delivery of the award is scheduled for November 25, 2010 in Lugano.
