The event, organized by the Associazione Italiana Sommeliers - Sezione Territoriale dell'Umbria (Umbria chapter of the Italian Association of Sommeliers, or AIS), in collaboration with the Facoltà di Agraria dell'Università di Perugia (School of Agriculture at Perugia University), with the support of Umbria Regional administration, the provincial administration of Perugia, as well as the office of Tourism Councilor and the Chamber of Commerce of Perugia, was a great success. Over 5,000 visitors, including wine lovers and trade professionals, met at the splendid San Pietro architectural complex which hosts the Facoltà di Agraria dell'Università di Perugia. Over 1,500 bottles were uncorked during the event, for over 20,000 tastes poured.
The 2010 Umbria Wine Festival is the fourth annual of this enological event dedicated to the best wines produced in the Umbria region. With over 50 wineries participating, the event is tantamount to a 'sneak preview' of Cantine Aperte (Open Cellars), the series of appointments dedicated to wine which will start officially at the end of May and will involve wineries from all over Italy.
The second Master Internazionale in Vini Passiti e da Meditazione took place during the event and was won by Roberto Anesi, professional sommelier, who won facing off against the strong competition of wine professionals from various parts of Italy. The second place went to Maurizio Zanolla, while Anna Tenti and Sergio Garreffa took third place with the same score. The competition was created by the Umbria chapter of the Italian Association of Sommeliers, and included a table service with a wine and food pairing test, the correction of a list of meditation wines, and the tasting of passiti dessert wines. The winner of the first master was Luca Martini, who was later awarded the honor of Miglior Sommelier d'Italia (Best Italian Sommelier) at the national competition organized in October 2009 by the Associazione Italiana Sommelier during the National Congress of the association in the Basilicata region.
The 2010 AIS National Congress will take place in Perugia under the auspices of the AIS Umbria, from September 30 to October 4. Over 600 sommeliers from Italy and abroad are expected to participate in the various wine related activities organized at the congress.
