Judging from the wide participation in the ninth annual dedicated to the best Italian produced sparkling wines, the economic crisis seem not to have affected the world of sparkling wines, or at least not as deeply as it is affecting other commercial sectors. In fact, around 1,000 people participated in the event organized by the Tuscany chapter of the Associazione Italiana Sommelier (AIS, or Italian Association of Sommeliers.)

For the occasion, Italian spumante and French champagne shared the scene, thanks to the preview presentation of the book ''Champagne e Champagnes'', written by Roberto Bellini and published by Bibenda. In addition to the author, publisher Franco Ricci, AIS vice president Antonello Maietta, Tuscany AIS chapter president Osvaldo Baroncelli, and the chair of AIS Versilia office, Andrea Balzani, participed in the event.
Spumantia® 2009 featured seminars about sparkling wine tasting techniques by Roberto Bellini, plus the Sparkling Award Carpené Malvolti competition dedicated to sommeliers, sponsored by the Carpené Malvolti estate and entitled ''Scopri l''Intruso'' (Find the Intruder) in which the competitors had to identify in a blind tatsting the sparkler not produced by Carpené Malvolti.
The winner of the competition was Chiara Freschi, a 25-year-old aspiring sommelier from Prato, in Tuscany, who is currently studying for the second level degree under Roberto Bellini. She loves sparkling wines, though, "as a good Tuscan native," said Freschi, her favorite vines are Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, while her favorite wine is the Duca Enrico di Salaparuta from Apulia.
"The success achieved by this young woman," commented the president of the AIS Tuscan chapter, Osvaldo Baroncelli, "is evident proof of the validity of the training courses organized by AIS in Tuscany. It demonstrates that, even without decades of professional experience, it is possible to achieve recognition and pride, simply by following one's passion and by praticing the educational training taught in our schools."
