The fifth VitignoItalia trade show took place from May 17 to 19, 2009, at the historic Castel dell'Ovo (Castle of the Egg), located on Naples' seafront, in the heart of the city. The Grand Hotel Excelsior hosted the institutional booths of the Agripromos agency, Enoteca Provinciale di Salerno (Salerno's Provincial Wine Bar), and Piccole Vigne (Little Vineyards), which this year featured the passito and other dessert wine types produced in the Campania region.

The gastronomic exhibitions of Cooking For Wine, coordinated by di Luigi Cremona, took place on the terrace of the Real Circolo Savoia (Savoia's Real Circle). During the three days of the show, nine young Southern Italian chefs from Sicily, Apulia and Campania, faced off competing for the prestigious award', which was wan by Sicilian chef, Giuseppe Costa, of the restaurant Bavaglino di Terrasini in Palermo.
Sunday. May 17, 2009 the show attracted large numbers of wine lovers and tourists, while Monday and Tuesday the castle's halls were mostly crowded by professional buyers for wine bars and restaurants. In fact, promoting business is the main mission of VitignoItalia, and 40 foreign buyers coming from Singapore, Canada, Usa, Hong Kong, Germany, Australia and United Kingdom, have met the exhibitors in one-on-one appointments for a total of 840 pre-arranged meetings.
"It is too early to take stock of the results of the show, as we had not had the time yet to evaluate the numbers, however it is evident that it was a success for the show as well as for the city," said the President of the trade show, Chicco De Pasquale. "Naples, with its seafront and the historic location [of the show], is the most suitable place to showcase Italian quality wines, as the three days of the show have demonstrated. With the new location for the show we further highlighted the strong link between the environment an wine, exporting world wide a unique image of the city, knowing that the wine is an extraordinary tourist vehicle."
Despite the recession, VitignoItalia marked a growing trend and the choice to promote wines produced with Italian native grapes turned out to be a winning point, as there are more and more Italian producers who decide to choose Naples to showcase their products and do business. The support offered by the administration of the Campania Region, Agriculture and Production Council, and Naples' municipal administration contributed to make VitignoItalia the must wine event in Central and Southern Italy.
