Sommelier Simona Bizzarri
On Tuesday, November 25, 2008, the awards for the Trofeo Consorzio Vini di Romagna – 8° Master del Sangiovese (Consortium of Romagna Wine Trophy – 8th Sangiovese Master), were assigned at the Enoteca Regionale dell'Emilia Romagna. This is one of the most important Italian enological competitions, where the main feature is always the Sangiovese, one of the most appreciated Italian grapes and wines worldwide.
The event was organized by the Consorzio Vini di Romagna (Consortium of Romagna Wines) and the AIS (Associazione Italiana Sommelier, or Italian Association of Sommeliers), in collaboration with the Enoteca Regionale Emilia Romagna and the municipal administration of Dozza. The prestigious title went to sommelier Simona Bizzarri from Arezzo, who beat Davide Staffa from Cotignola, who took the second place for the second year in a row, in a series of written, oral, tasting and service tests. The third and fourth place were assigned to sommeliers Luca Martini from Arezzo, and Roberto Anes, from Trento, respectively.
The victory is important for Simona Bizzarri, sommelier at the restaurant La Nuova Tagliatella (The New Noodle) in Arezzo, because in addition to recognizing her professional expertise, she is only the second woman to win the Master del Sangiovese in the eight years since the competition started.
The expert jury included:
- Giordano Zinzani, President of the Consorzio Vini di Romagna,
- Gian Alfonso Roda, President of the Enoteca Regionale Emilia Romagna,
- Gian Carlo Mondini, President of the Romagna chapter of the AIS,
- Hiarusca Martellato, Vice President of the Romagna chapter of the Assoenologi (Italian Association of Enologists),
- Ivano Antonini, winner of the 2007 Master and recent winner of the title Miglior Sommelier d'Italia (Best Italian Sommelier),
- Franco Ziliani, expert wine and food journalist.
Canadian journalist Cinda Chavich of the magazine 'Globe and Mail', and Maurizio Magni, director of the Italian magazine 'Mare&Monti' ('Sea&Mountains), acted as special judges for the service test among the finalists.
