Bkind Tasting

The results of the fourth competition entitled Selezione dei Vini del Lazio (Selection of Latium Wines), the event organized by ARSIAL (Agenzia Regionale per lo Sviluppo e l'Innovazione dell'Agricoltura nel Lazio, or Regional Agency for the Development and Innovation of Agriculture in the Latium Region), in collaboration with Rome's provincial administration and the Consortiums for the protection of the regional wines, which took place from June 19th, to 21st, 2008. Three days of tasting for 40 experts, including enotechnicians and journalists from various parts of Italy and two in representation of foreign magazines. This veritable tour de force which produced 4,440 tasting cards, including 62,230 evaluations, and went through 4,800 glasses, took place under the auspices of the Associazione Enologi Enotecnici Italiani (ASSOENOLOGI, OR Association of Italian Enologists and Enotechnicians).

"A thorough undertaking," highlighted Daniela Valentini, Agriculture councilor for the Latium region, "whose results prove the constant growth of this vitally important sector. The fact that 275 wines made the [excellent wine] list, that is over 60% of the wines tasted, marking an 11% increase over the 49% which made it at the first event of the series, in 2005, is the most visible sign of the excellent work done in recent years by both producers and regional institutions".

Selezione dei Vini del Lazio - Blind Tasting

Friday, July 4, 2008, the wines which made the selection were awarded at the evocative Palazzo Rospigliosi in Rome. The prize-awarding event offered the opportunity to catch the best regional producers all together.

"The thing that gives me enormous pleasure," commented Fabio Massimo Pallottini, ARSIA's Commissioner Extraordinaire, "is the great number of estates which made the list. Obviously there are well known names, but there are also several surprises. Small estates, often under the leadership of young entrepreneurs, presented wines which earned considerable evaluations."

In fact, there were 92 estates which received at least one prize. They are many and widespread among the regional territory. The province of Rome leads the pack for numbers of awards, as it presented a larger number of labels. In any case the other provinces follow not far behind.

During the presentation of the awards, the Calix Aureus (Golden Goblet in Latin) attracted much attention. These are the 30 labels which obtained the higher evaluation. Here at the top as well we find a variety of estates from different provinces. A total of 26 producers were awarded the top recognition: 11 from the province of Rome, seven from Viterbo, five from Latina and three from Frosinone. Among the 30 'golden wines', 14 are red, 10 white and six are meditation wines.

Bottom line, this year's Selezione saw the Latium vineyards achieve levels of top, absolute quality.
