Vino in Villa Usa 2008: San Francisco, California
Staff Writer - June 10, 2008
Monday, June 9, 2008, the second annual Vino in Villa wine event in San Francisco, took place. The event was organized by the Consorzio Tutela del Vino Prosecco DOC di Conegliano e Valdobbiadene (Consortium [for the] Protection of the Prosecco DOC Wine from Conegliano and Valdobbiadene) who, a few years back crossed the water and brought with them a selection of the best wines to New York and, since last year, to San Francisco, California, as well.
On a wonderful sunny day cooled by a pleasant sea breeze, 25 producers from the Italian DOC appellation production area for the sparkling e Prosecco di Conegliano e Valdobbiadene wine, poured their fresh bubbly from 11AM to 4PM, at Fort Mason's Greens Restaurant, in the exclusive Marina district of San Francisco, in what used to be the city's navy port before being de-commissioned by the Clinton administration. The invited guest were restauranteurs, wholesalers, importers, consultants, professional buyers, trade journalists and the usual passionate lovers of quality wines. The event was organized by the MacKenzie Agency, which specializes in brand-building communications for the food and beverage marketplace and has offices in Santa Rosa, California, and New York.

Among the producers arrived from Italy via New York there was also Maurizio Favrel, the young owner and winemaker of the prize winning Azienda Agricola Malibrán, which was very recently awarded one of the 51 gold medals assigned by the prestigious Italian wine competition entitled La Selezione del Sindaco. The 2008 competition took place from May 30, to June 1st, 2008, at the former monastery of Santa Maria in Valle di Cividale, along the Strada Colli Orientali del Friuli (Wine Road of the Eastern Hills of Friuli). The Valdobbiadene DOC Prosecco Spumante Extra Dry 'Gorio' by Malibrán was awarded one of the 13 gold medals, that is over 25% of the total, which went to the Veneto region.
Malibrán's Prosecco is currently imported in the United States in the Spumante Extra Dry and Spumante Brut versions, in the states of New York, Oregon, Washington and California, where it is part of the product portfolio represented by Italian Flavor Consortium, that is, the commercial department of the WineCountry.IT network, which oversees imports and distribution in the US of selected products, among other services provided to the associated estates.
For the occasion, the president of WineCountry.IT, Loris Scagliarini, joined Maurizio Favrel in presenting the two wines which received enthusiastic feedback from those who tasted them for the first time, while for those who already knew them, it was a confirmation of the constant quality of these products. The Brut version, which, with 12 points of residual sugar is decidedly drier than the Extra Dry version which measures at 18 its sugar residue, turned out to be the most appreciated wine at the show, as expressed by various guests.
Other moments of San Francisco's Vino in Villa 2008
At first the guests arrived in small numbers, probably because of the early hour of day, but from around 12:30 on, the house filled and stayed fairly packed until closing time.
"All in all, I would say that the event was quite successful," declared Scagliarini. "We made some interesting new connections and the great quality of the wine was the source of much satisfaction. I personally noticed at least five instances of tasters who had already tried Maurizio's wine point colleagues and new arrivals to his table," said the president of WineCountry.IT.
