Sessa Aurunca: Legendary Falerno Wine and Terre Aurunche Olive Oil

Saturday, April 5th, and Sunday, April 6th, 2008, the town of Sessa Aurunca, in the province of Caserta, in the Campania region, offers up its treasures on the occasion of the 16th annual event entitled Giornata Fai di Primavera (Springtime Do Day), when the association Agrisviluppo invites visitors to taste the gastronomic specialties from this ancient land, enclosed between the Tyrrhenian Sea, Mount Massico, and the forest on the slopes of the Roccamonfina dormant volcano.

The annual event represent an invitation to discover the ancient town, first a Lombard fiefdom, which later became Norman, and its surroundings. This area is famous for the appreciated Falerno wine and the local extra virgin olive oil. In addition to art, palaces and churches, the gourmand tourist will have the opportunity to take a journey in the land of the legendary Falerno, the wine favored by the ancient Romans and celebrated in the literary work of Plinus, Orazio, Marziale and Petronius. Not to be overlooked is the Terre Aurunche extra virgin olive oil, whose DOP denomination has already been approved and is pending registration by the European Union. It's important to highlight the fact that the Terre Aurunche olive oil it is made according to traditional production methods, harvesting the olives by hand and crushing them in ancient mills. The main olive variety is called Sessana, and produces a yellow-green oil, fruity, and slightly spicy to the palate, with nuances of artichoke and almonds.

On the occasion of the Giornata Fai, the association Agrisviluppo and the Caserta Chamber of Commerce propose one-of-a-kind journey of taste and flavor with 'wine tasting and tales', an event within the event. In the historic center of Sessa Aurunca, among ancient doorways and enclosed courtyards, a gastronomic itinerary dedicated to the specialty of this land will be set up. Visitors will enjoy the local annurche apples, cheeses from Caserta, honey and other agricultural products. The townsfolk will dress in traditional costumes and offer the ancient peasant snack of bread and olive oil to the visitors, pairing it with the Falerno del Massico DOC wines, in both the red and white version, while the local vintners will recite verses dedicated to the legendary wine of the Roman emperors, or Ager Phalernus in Latin.

Tibullo, Plinius, Orazio and Marziale raved about it, defining it an "ardent, strong" wine, while Petronius, describing the proverbial Trimalcione dinner, tells that the haustores, or the Roman equivalent of today's sommeliers, served Falerno wine aged for 100 years.
