European Sideways 2008 - Day One
Loris Scagliarini - February 20, 2008

Wednesday, February 20, 2008: Leaving
I drive across the Golden Gate Bridge under a blue sky on balmy afternoon with the sun roof open. The sky is not as blue when I get to Produce Avenue, in South San Francisco, where I park the car at the FastTrack long term parking, and there is a dramatic ceiling of thick white/gray clouds hanging over the bay.

The minibus picks me up at the spot where I parked and hands me a ticket with my row and parking spot number. In less than half hour I have already gone through custom and am sitting in front of a wide window overlooking the cargo area of the airport, sipping a glass of Alois Lageder Pinot Grigio at the Il Fornaio food area.

As I have dutifully arrived three hours in advance and zoomed through check in with my electronic ticket, I have almost two hours to kill before boarding and almost three before take off.

We board in time, but then wait a full hour before taking off while mechanics fix a faulty light on the left wing.
