Red Wine in Moderation Promotes Health, Majority Believe, According to New Survey
Staff Writer - October 20, 2006

Morellino di ScansanoA new survey conducted by morefocus, an online research organization, revealed telling information about people's attitudes towards wine and health. An overwhelming majority of people (94%) believe moderate consumption of red wine is beneficial to health, and would drink it for health benefits even if they don't like the taste.

The results of the survey revealed some interesting details about the thought process when it comes to drinking wine. Respondents were told that current research indicates red wines contain more of the substances that help prevent heart disease than do white wines, and were then asked if this information would affect their drinking habits. Sixty-five percent of those surveyed said they would drink more red wine. Additionally, almost 22 percent of respondents said this information would persuade them to drink more red wine, even though they don't like red wine and/or prefer white wine.

"The most surprising aspect of the research was how clearly and overwhelmingly people believe in the health benefits of red wine," said Dr. Regan Carey, morefocus Research Director. "That people would drink red wine purely for health benefits, even if they don't like the taste, really highlights the different mind-set of drinking wine versus other alcoholic beverages."

People's thoughts on the definition of moderation were also explored in the survey. The research shows that people's perception of "moderate" drinking fell in line with their own consumption practices. While 56 percent of respondents defined moderation as two glasses of wine per day, 61 percent drink at most one glass of wine per day.

When asked about what people would like to see on wine labels, 44 percent of those surveyed said they would like to see guidelines for healthy levels of consumption. However, a considerable number, 33 percent, said they would not make any changes to current wine labels.

"The survey showed that, although people value information on the health aspects of red wine and may change some habits accordingly, an individual's concept of what is healthy consumption usually wins out in the end," said Carey. "And interestingly, the research shows that most people's idea of healthy consumption falls within a general consensus of what moderation means."
