Torres Winery Experiments with Screw-Cap Closure
Staff Writer - August 25, 2003

Torres Winery LogoTorres, one of the largest family-owned Spanish wineries, has began exporting some of its white wines in bottles sealed with screw caps. 12,000 cases of Viña Esmeralda 2002 are selling on the British markets for about $8 a bottle.

Each bottle is provided with a neck tag explaining that the choice was made with two goals in mind: preventing TCA taint and preserving the wine's freshness.

Torres is the first Spanish wine producer to try such a closure. If the experiment is successful, the winery plans to introduce the same closure method into the United States market next year.
