Italian Foreign Trade Boosted by Wine Staff Writer - July 5, 2005
The number of Italian bottles of wine exported worldwide increased 11% in 2005.
The exports toward EU markets went up 10%, while the non-EU markets grew 13%. In particular, the revised values show that the exports toward the United States went up 14%, emerging markets such as Russia went up 47% and China grew a whopping 94%, though the overall exports in these countries are still modest when compared to the US.
These numbers emerged as part of a Coldiretti analysis of the Italian foreign trade data in the first quarter of 2005 that highlights the fact that wine is the main italian food-related exports, with a projected value of roughly €3 billion in 2005. The increased value marked in the first quarter of the year is 7.3%.
"This is a positive result for national wine production, two-thirds of which was destined to EU countries – mostly to Germany, which remains the main European market – while about one third of Italian wine destined for export is consumed outside the EU, mostly in the United States, where so far, Italian wine is beating Australian and French wines in 2005," said Coldiretti.
