TuttoSesto is a young and dynamic Italian company specializing in building vaulted ceilings. This is not the kind of enterprise that we usually cover, however, the passion and professionalism of the TuttoSesto team, as well as the esthetic and commercial value of their wonderful construction work, convinced us that it might be an interesting subject for our readers.

The TuttoSesto project started in the hilly countryside of Ascoli Piceno, where the vault is the traditional rural ceiling that has guaranteed sound stability and structural security for centuries.

"We began researching and studying cross vaults, which are the most used and fascinating among the ones used in our area, when we were still students..." days Luciano Iacoponi, creator and coordinator of TuttoSesto.

In the Mediterranean tradition, vaults and wine have been linked since time immemorial. Thus, the TuttoSesto team proposes their work for wine bars, cellars, holiday farms, country restaurants, as well as for private residences. They are truly convinced that this kind of ceiling represents a precious historic and cultural legacy, in addition to ensuring safety and stability in the buildings.

The technique used by TuttoSesto allows for a smooth finish that is the reflection of traditional vaults. It is pleasant to the eye and doesn't need plaster work.

Types of Vaults
In ancient Roman times as well as in the Middle Ages, vaults were very common. They were used instead of the attics, but required great effort and skilled workmanship.

Because of their geometric shape, vaults are defined either 'simple', when the intrados, or the inner curve of the arch, is made of a single surface, or 'composite', when the intrados consists instead of multiple surfaces.

  • Simple Vaults
    • Barrel, cylindrical, or round vault
The intrados is made of a half-cylindrical surface
    • Barrel climbing vault
When vaults lean on the walls with an inclined impost floor, this kind of vault usually covers the ladder's flight, following the slope
    • Spherical or basin vault
The intrados of this kind of vault is a spherical surface or just a part of it, to lay down on cylindrical piers
    • Ribbed vault on squared plan
This kind as well, derives from a spherical vault. In fact, by inscribing a virtual square inside the circular base of a spherical vault and leading vertical plans by its sides to cut the vault, the remaining portion is precisely the ribbed vault.
  • Composite Vaults
    • Cloister vault on squared plan
In this kind of vault, the intrados surface is generated by the union of four identical cylindrical spindles
    • Barrel vault with cloister head
Consists of a barrel vault built on the longest sides of the space that need to be covered, plus two cylindrical spindles built on the shortest sides
    • Cross vault
The intrados surface is generated by the union of four cylindrical groins.
