During the current Christmas and New Year's Holiday celebrations, around 80 million bottles of Italian Spumante will be opened in Italy. Sweet wines are preferred over dry and brut wines during this period.
"The success of national brands compared to imported Champagne, whose imports in the first nine months of the year showed a drop of 21 percent, is such that foreign brands will probably not reach the four million bottles that were estimated last year," according to Coldiretti, the Italian association of farmers and producers.
In addition, around 70 million bottles of Italian spumante will be opened abroad, especially in Germany and the United States, where Italian Spumante had an increase of 10 percent in the first nine months of 2004, according to the data released by the Italian Wine & Food Institute. Such increase is truly noteworthy, considering that the imports of Italian wines to the U S fell 9.9 percent in the same period.
