It's the Tuscan brand Antinori, followed by Gaja, Biondi Santi, Castello Banfi, Caprai, Planeta, Frescobaldi, Bellavista, Ferrari and Ornellaia.
And the most famous Italian wine in the world?
There is no doubt: first place goes to the Sassicaia della Tenuta San Guido, followed by Brunello di Montalcino Riserva di Biondi Santi, Barbaresco di Gaja, Ornellaia and Masseto della Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, Solaia di Antinori, Sagrantino di Montefalco "25 Anni" di Caprai, Amarone of Valpolicella "Vigneto Monte Lodoletta" of Dal Forno, Chianti Classico "Castello di Fonterutoli" of the Castello di Fonterutoli, Franciacorta "Annamaria Clementi" of Ca' del Bosco and Barolo Brunate di Roberto Voerzio.
And what is the most appealing wine-growing area?
The leaders are Langhe (with Barolo and Barbaresco) and Montalcino, with Brunello; then comes Chianti Classico, Collio, Amarone-Valpolicella, Bolgheri, Sagrantino-Montefalco, Alto Adige, Franciacorta and Prosecco Conegliano-Valdobbiadene.
All of this emerged from a poll of 8,894 wine lovers done in collaboration with Vinitaly. The first three spots of the list of the best known brands are taken by Antinori, Gaja and Biondi Santi: a result that remarks on the value of these brands, which started the so-called "rebirth" of Italian wine in the world.
The poll, which showed the trends of the wine world, also analyzed the personal preferences of those interviewed.
The wine lovers agree on the glamour enjoyed by classic Italian wines abroad (Barolo, Barbaresco, Brunello di Montalcino, Amarone della Valpolicella, Chianti Classico), but wines born from the mixing of home grown and international wines are still considered great "ambassadors" of Italian wine in the world. An indicative figure is represented by the interest of those interviewed in so-called "real" or "extreme" wines, fruit of radical style characterisations or particular techniques (such as biodynamics) with many voting for Ribolla Gialla by Gravner, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo by Valentini, Brunello di Montalcino Case Basse di Soldera, Barolo of Bartolo Mascarello or Querciabella wines.
But Italian wines in the world are not only made up of luxury brands or homemade goods. Good placements were received by large companies as well, such as Zonin, Gancia, Rocca delle Macie, Mezzacorona, Santa Margherita, Duca di Salaparuta (Corvo), Sella & Mosca, Gruppo Italiano Vini (Giv). These are the companies that have consolidated the fame of Italian wine in the major international markets.
