Staff Writer - August 25, 2003

Champagne Veuve Cliquot PonsardinAccording to Information Resources Inc., sales of French wines dropped considerably in the United States following the disagreement between the two countries over the war in Iraq.

As of March 23, 2003 the sales drop was 13.9% on a yearly basis, while considering the four week period ending the same day the decrease was 17.2% when compared with the same period twelve months earlier. The four weeks ending April 20, 2003 saw an even higher drop in volume marking a 22.6% decrease compared to the same period a year earlier.

These numbers are in clashing contrast with the figures for overall wine consumption in the United States, which rose in volume a noticeable 1.8% in March and a solid 5.7% in April.
