Sofia Coppola and Thomas Mars Marry in Italy Staff Writer -- Published - August 28, 2011
Sofia Coppola and Thomas Mars, front man/lead singer of the French rock band, Phoenix, married Saturday, August 27, 2011 in a civil ceremony in the Southern Italian hamlet of Bernalda, in the province of Matera, in Italy.
The couple tied the knot at Palazzo Margherita, an outstanding historical villa owned by Sofia's father, film director Francis Ford Coppola in the town his parents are from. He walked his daughter, who was wearing a lavender bridal gown designed especially for the ceremony by Azzedine Alaïa, down the aisle.
The 40 year old director of Lost in Translation and the 34 year old French rock star entertained their 80 or so guests, including actor Johnny Depp and film director George Lucas among them, with an Italian style wedding repast including a variety of local cheeses, salads, figs, pasta, fish, and pork. The wine which paired all the entrees was, of course, produced on the family's farm.
The wedding ceremony was
performed by Leonardo Chiruzzi, mayor of Bernalda, who said that: "Everything went well. It was simple, calm, in the garden. If they wanted to do a Hollywood wedding, they wouldn't have done it here. They chose to do it here because it's here - it's here that is beautiful."
Francis Ford Coppola renovated the property extensively for the wedding, and the ceremony underscored the end of the rebuilding.
Francis' grand-nephew, Gaetano Russo, said that the renovated palace "... will soon be inaugurated as a resort, open to the public."
Sofia Coppola is divorced from director Spike Jonze, to whom she was married from 1999 to 2003. She included a song by Mars' band, Phoenix in the 2003 oscar winning Lost in Translation soundtrack after hearing their first album, United.
The Mars and Coppola engagement, first revealed in May 2011, has been going on for quite a while, in fact the couple has two daughters, 4-year-old Romy, and 15-month-old Cosima.
