Import taxes in India don't slow down the march of wine Staff Writer - June 28, 2004
Imports and consumption are increasing.
In 2003, India's total wine consumption was around 3.5 million liters, or an average consumption of 4.6 liters (4.86 quarts). Yet, according to ICE, the Italian Institute for International Trade, consumption is expected to double to 7 million liters over the next two years.
On the basis of current business plans, consumption of imported wines will match that of wines produced in India. While currently, the latter production represents the great majority of local sales, the volumes of wine imports are increasing constantly, notwithstanding the steep customs duties that run from 20 percent to 75 percent of the cost.
On wines that cost less than $25, the import tax is 75 percent, while for wines costing $25 to $40 import duties are 50 percent, and for wines that cost over $40 taxes are about 20 percent.
That said, the potentialfor an increase in wine sales in India is enormous.
