The Franciacorta wine zone in Lombardy, Italy, where the sparkling of the same name is produced, is undoubtedly among the first viticultural areas of Italy to start harvesting.

A map of the Franciacorta production area made in 1429, which reports the exact area of the 240 square kilometers (92.66 square miles) and includes the 21 towns of:
Adro, Brescia, Brione, Capriolo, Cazzago San Martino, Cellatica, Coccaglio, Cologne, Corte Franca, Erbusco, Gussago, Iseo, Monticelli Brusati, Ome, Paderno di Franciacorta, Paratico, Passirano, Polaveno, Provaglio d'Iseo, Rodengo-Saiano and Rovato
Thanks to the regularity of the season's weather, the harvest of grapes used to produce the Franciacorta sparkling wines started today, on August 18, 2010. According to the projection of the Consorzio per la Tutela del Franciacorta (Consortium for the Protection of Franciacorta), this year's production of Chardonnay, Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) and Pinot Bianco (White Pinot) grape varieties will be around 22,000 metric tons, grown in 2,400 hectares (5,930 acres) of vineyards.
The projection made by the consortium took into account the result of summer hail storms, which destroyed about 10% of the grapes.
