Frignano Gourmet – June 2004 News Letter Newsletter - June 2, 2004
Summer opens with "sweetness", the sweetness of an "I do" that is forever!
New products from Turchi and Giamberlano cake shops, attractive wedding menus at the Ristorante La Vecchia Quercia (The Old Oak Restaurant) and the Sottosopra (Upside Down) Wine Summer big surprise.
Marisa Tognarelli, owner of the Pasticceria Turchi (Turchi Cake Shop) in Sestola, works continually at hers almond crunch sculptures, among which there is a reproduction of Montorso church, with its architectural balance and elegant, harmonious shapes. Marisa is preparing thousands of creative almond crunch place cards as well as a new almond cake. Pleasant and light, made with essential and natural products, the cakes are a more healthful and delicious alternative to the traditional fatty, cream-rich wedding cakes.
New as well is the "linea benessere" ("Well being Line") cinnamon chocolate. Thanks to its stimulating, invigorating and digestive properties, cinnamon is an ideal summer product. The creation features a mixture of cream, milk and plain chocolate sprinkled with pure ground cinnamon nuggets coated with 7 percent plain chocolate. In addition, we should mention last month's creation, the characteristically digestive and relaxing Anice Stellato (Star Anise). The Pasticceria Turchi will be closed for vacations from June 20 to July 15.
The restaurant La Vecchia Quercia (The Old Oak) is completely booked with wedding, first communion and confirmation receptions. The warm welcome, total availability as well as the possibility of choosing among custom, elegant menus such as the one based on chocolate, have made this restaurant one of the favorite reception places among newlyweds.
Owner Gianluca Di Stasio invites all 2005 newlyweds to make their reservations by June 2004, to be safe and make sure that the restaurant will be available for their wedding reception. Starting the and of May, the recently widened 90-seat summer veranda is open, offering patrons a cool oasis where they can enjoy delicious gastronomic creations and exceptional wines from the extensive wine list.
Busy as always preparing monumental cakes, the well known chocolate maker Valter Tagliazucchi amazes with his tireless energy and inborn passion. To newlyweds he proposes cool, new skillfully combined flavors, such as the fresh raspberry with coconut, or lemon strawberry cakes. The "Dolce Raimondo", or "Raimondo Cake" continues its triumphant rise to achieve well deserved general appreciation. Should you happen to be in the area, be sure not to miss it. As usual, he will be creating small pastries, candies and wedding place cards with the characteristic elegance that customers have come to expect from the man who Daniele Bondi has defined the "Pasticcere dell’Anima", or "Pastry Chef of the Soul". Unfortunately, chocolate is a summer no-no. Though this is a pity, it will give people the possibility of trying all the novelties proposed by the Giamberlano cake shop. However, we know that patrons will miss the three-pepper pralines and the recently created Sechoun chocolate and look forward to Autumn, when these sweet delicacies will be back.
The Sottosopra (Upside Down) Wine Bar & Restaurant is getting ready to open its summer garden, allowing tourists and residents alike to enjoy wine tasting in a cool night open-air space. The opening of the Sottosopra Wine Summer is scheduled for Friday, June 18 .
Sottosopra presents a newly-created menu featuring delicious fruits and salads, that includes the best Italian and imported cheeses, cold cuts, warm croissant, the mythic torta dell'Angela, or Angela's cake, as well as many more delicious surprises.
As usual, wines and liquors will be selected by Giovanni Montecchi of the Enoteca (Wine Bar) La Morra which, in addition to over 300 wine labels, this year introduces some special beers. In addition, the best selling summer drinks are back. The Ghetoreid Rosso (play on words, in fact Ghetoreid is not an Italian word but the Italian spelling for "Gatorade, therefore, the name sounds like "Red Gatorade") is a drink with a base of the regional Lambrusco di Sorbara wine and ice, while the Ghetoreid Bianco (White Gatorade) features a base of sweet Malvasia and ice. And of course, rivers of Champagne.
Bottom line, it will be a summer filled with new eno-gastronomic novelties available from the evening happy hours to the early hours of the following morning!
