Italian WIne to the Conquest of China
Staff Writer - July 24, 2006

Rice is a whole different thing when paired with a good glass of Italian wine.

That must be what's in the minds of the Chinese consumers, as the Italian wine imports into the country rose by 96.9% in the first 4 months of 2006.

The elaboration by Coldiretti (the Italian farmers' association), based upon ISTAT (Italian Institute of Statistics) data, reveals that in the same period the total Italian exports rose 6.1%. Italian wine is also making waves in the US, with imports up 7.8%. All this notwithstanding, a full 50% of Italian export value goes to other members of the European Union, where the export figure is almost flat, showing an increase of just 0.5%.

Coldiretti says that the results in the first 4 months of 2006 show new and relevant opportunities for growth.

Wine is a heritage that must be protected and Coldiretti is adamant on the subject.

"We must defend Italian wine from imitation and unfair competition, which, for example, is based on a lack of information about the modalities of the wine ageing", said Coldiretti in a direct reference to the EU recently approved technique to artificially flavor the wine with the addition of wood chips.

Though such technique has long been widely used by New World producers, the major part of the Italian wine industry players ask that when a wine is produced in that way, it must be stated on its label in a fairly visible fashion, so that consumers are honestly and clearly informed about the product they are about to drink.

Coldiretti supports a bipartisan Parliamentary motion to protect the Italian wine against such production shortcuts, which undermine wine quality and rob consumers of their right to honest and clear information.
