Staff Writer - July 3, 2006

Italian wine exports to Brazil increased a solid 49% in volume in the first four months of 2006.

Compared to the same period in 2005, Italian wine exports increased from 1.235 million liters (around 326,252 gallons) to 1.846 million liters (around 487,662 gallons). The data were reported by the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

Italy is the fourth supplier of wine to the South American country, following Chile, Argentina and Portugal.

The increase in Italian exports is mostly due to the increase in wine sales in Brazil, which, in the first four months of 2006, reached 15 million liters (around 3.96 million gallons), about 11 million (around 2.9 million gallons) of which, or 74% of the total, were imported.

"Italian wine is conquering ever-larger market sectors, especially with refined customers," said Senator Edoardo Pollastri, president of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and of Assocamerestero, or the Association of Italian Chamber of Commerce Abroad.

"Competition, however, especially from Chile, is fierce and plays mainly on costs, even though South American wine growers are making large steps forward as far as quality is concerned," continued Pollastri. "We Italians must make greater efforts, especially in marketing and distribution, to familiarize the Brazilian people with our typical products and our products of excellence."
