Italian Wines Topped by Australians in the US
Staff Writer - April 25, 2006

Australia - ItalyFor the second time in history, Australian wines have surpassed the Italian ones on the US market. In the month of January the Australian wines increased 13.7 percent, while Italian wine imports grew just 7.9 percent. This has happened before, in the six month period between January 1, to June 30, 2004.

The new data was reported by Coldiretti, and is based on figures released by the Italian Food & Wine Institute, relating to January 2006.

Italy, despite holding a considerable market share of 29.1 percent for imported wines, had to give way to new producing countries such as Australia, which – with a yearly production of 13.3 million hectoliters (over 351 million gallons) – took on an aggressive exportation strategy based on competitive prices.

"In order to take the leadership back, after the important quality-focused process in 2005 – claims Coldiretti – Italy should stake its marketing strategy on differentiation and territorial characteristics."

Italy can be the leading wine exporter to the US once again as in 2005, with its 48.1 million hectoliters (over 1,270 million gallons) €9 billion turnover – exportation value €3 billion (check current value in other currencies). – 460 DOC, DOCG and IGT appellation controlled wines
