Wine in Italy: Sales +62% in large-scale retail Staff Writer - January 26, 2006
The growth of large-scale retail wine sales in 2005 exceeded 62% in volume, or over 5 million hectoliters. By adding discount markets, the percentage reached 75.4%. Sales in specialized wine shops, or particular distribution channels where consumption counts as much as sale, increased 6.5% in volume and 16.5% in value.
These figures are the result of a market survey carried out by Verona's promoters of Vinitaly, whose next exhibition is scheduled from April 6th to the 10th.
According to the survey, sales of DOC wines in supermarkets and hypermarkets grew as well (2%), and currently account for over 52% of global sales for wines priced from €3 to €10.
The wholesale offer is made more attractive by the fact that average price-per-bottle decreased from €3 to €2.85 in 2005, especially for the 750 milliliter bottles which currently account for more than 60% of the whole market.
