Chinese winery begins selling in United States Staff Writer - December 27, 2005
Chinese producer Chateau Changyu-Castel started importing wines to the United States, including one varietal of French origin that has been extinct in Europe for quite a long time.
Chateau Changyu-Castel is a joint venture between Chang Yu Pioneer Wine C. Ltd., owner of the oldest vineyard in China, having been established in 1892, and French Group Castel.
Three varieties are currently being exported to the United States: 2003 Chardonnay and 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon, both priced at $15; and the 1995 Cabernet Gernischt, sold to consumers at around $17 (see value in other currencies.)
The Cabernet Gernischt is a varietal that was exported to China from Europe in 1892, when the original vineyard now belonging to Chang Yu Pioneer Wine C. Ltd. was first planted, but later became extinct in Europe during the grape blight of the early 1900s. The Cabernet Gernischt is most closely related to the Cabernet Franc.
Importer Yellow Moon is initially targeting mid-Atlantic and New England states.
