On April 20, 2009 the Sagrantino Day International took place in 43 different places, including 29 Italian cities and 14 international locations: New York and Washington in the US; Tokyo and Osaka in Japan; Berlin, Hanover, Hamburg, Cologne, Kassel, and Darmstadt in Germany; London in England; Amsterdam in The Netherlands, plus Brussells and Luxemburg.

The event is unique in the world and has involved 4,000 sommeliers located in 43 different cities scattered around the globe who, the same day, tasted the Montefalco native wine.

Montefalco, Umbria

The objective of the event, which expands its reach from year to year, is to present the Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG and Montefalco DOC to international buyers for the hotel, restaurant, wine bar and catering industries, as well as to educated consumers and opinion leaders around the world. After the tasting the sommelier filled out a questionnaire for the Consorzio di Tutela (Consortium for the Protection [of the Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG and Montefalco DOC]), which will elaborate the cumulative data in collaboration with the University of Florence.

The Sagrantino di Montefalco Numbers

In seven years the Montefalco denominations have registered consistent growth. In fact, the Sagrantino DOCG vineyards grew from 122 hectares (slightly over 300 acres) in 2000, to 660 (over 1,630 acres) in 2008; while the Montefalco Rosso expanded from 157 hectares (around 388 acres) in 2000, to 430 (over 1,062 acres) this year.

The production grew accordingly, from 666,000 bottles of Sagrantino di Montefalco produced in 2002 to over 2 million bottles in 2005, the vintage currently on the market. The Montefalco Rosso more than doubled the production, from 1 million bottles in 2002, to 2,170,000 bottles in 2006, or the vintage currently in distribution.

The trend of the most recent years shows a consistent quality increase, thanks to the great work in the vineyards as well as in the cellar. Despite the increased production though, the Montefalco wines must remain a niche denomination, whose distinctive characteristics are the quality and the strong link with the terroir.

The event was first presented on Friday, April 3, 2009, at the latest Vinitaly trade show in Verona, Italy, , during the press conference entitled "Sagrantino Day International 2009 - L'autoctono di Montefalco fa il giro del mondo con l'Associazione Italiana Sommelier" (Sagrantino Day International 2009 - The native wine from Montefalco on a world tour with the Italian Association of Sommeliers), and on April 16, at a press conference in Rome, in the Parlamentino Cavour hall of the Ministry of Agriculture.

After the April 20 tasting, the closing event took place from 4 to 9PM, on Tuesday, April 28, in Rome, at the Hotel Rome Cavalieri - The Waldorf Astoria Collection.

The Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG and Montefalco DOC label, which were tasted paired with Umbrian cheeses and cold cuts, were provided by 15 wine estates: Adanti, Antonelli San Marco, Cantine Novelli, Cesarini Sartori, Colpetrone, Fattoria Colsanto, Fontecolle, Lungarotti, Madonna Alta, Perticaia, Terre della Custodia, Terre della Torre, Terre de Trinci, Tiburzi, Tudernum.
