Italian Wine Import Up 50.7% in Russia
Staff Writer - May 4, 2006

Russia is one of the emerging markets for Italian wine consumption, registering a yearly import increase of 50.7 percent.

Russia

This is the outcome of a survey by Coldiretti about the market destination for Italian wines in 2005. The result was revealed by Coldiretti during April's 40th Vinitaly, in Verona, Italy.

According to the growers' association, the result is due partially to the boycott of traditional wine exporting countries to Russia, such as Moldavia and Georgia, but mainly to the increase of Russian tourism to Italy, which gave a large number of Russian citizens the possibility of appreciating the quality of Italian products, thus fueling the fast growth of internal demand back home.

This is a very relevant and concrete positive signal for Italian wines among the new markets, such as China, where sales equal only €4.7 million, while India has not even reached one million Euros (check the current value in other currencies.)

The United States – reported Coldiretti – was still the top importer in 2005, with an overall growth of 4.2 percent (according to figures by ISTAT, the Italian Institute os Statistics), with a total of €771.3 million (check the current value in other currencies,) which represents a quarter of the overall value of Italian exports.
