Italian Sparkling Wine Grows More than Champagne in the U S Staff Writer - September 3, 2004
The value of Italian sparkling wine exports went up 43.2 percent in the U S, with a growth rate almost double that registered for French champagne, up 25.8 percent in the same period of time.
This information was released by Coldiretti, the Italian Confederation of farm-owners, on the basis of figures published by the Italian Wine & Food Institute concerning the first six months of 2004.
According to Coldiretti, the growing popularity of Italian sparkling wines is a promising sign, considering that this year's vintage is expected to be top-quality.
This data is viewed as a springboard to consistently grow exports of Italian sparkling wines to the United States. Despite the fact that sparkling wines produced in the U S are doing well, 13.3 percent of the money Americans spend on foreign sparkling wines goes into Italian-made wines.
However, due to the high selling cost, French-made Champagne still takes in 77.8 percent of the total sales value of foreign sparkling wines.
