Wine: A Powerhouse of Healthful Nutrients
Staff Writer - July 7, 2007

Paired with a correct diet, the moderate daily consumption of wine, equal to around three glasses drunk with meals, reduces the risk of cardiovascular illnesses about 25%, as well as up to 40% the risk of neurodegegenerative illnesses such as Alzheimer's.

These are the comforting results of a study conducted by a large group of researchers from the universities of Udine and Trieste. The research is part of the Progetto Villanova (Villanova Project), promoted and financed by the Tenuta Villanova wine estate, located in Farra d'Isonzo, in the province of Gorizia.

Understanding how the different components of a diet biologically affect human health is one of the aspects which must be understood in order to make the right social choices in the field of prevention. The research by professor Sabina Passamonti of the University of Trieste moves in this direction and aims to discover if the phenolic components found in wine, fruits and vegetables have nutritional value, in addition to neutralizing the free radicals, as various studies have shown.

In particular, the study in question found that grapes produce antocians and polyphenols in reaction to oxidation, an ability the human body appears to have lost in the course of evolution.

When drinking wine, in addition to assimilating the alcoholic component, the human organism assimilates the phenolic content as well, which contains antocians. This component is assimilated by the blood and, subsequently, by the cerebral cells.

One fact which surprised the researchers was discovering that these components, which are known to be found in red wines, turned out to be present is consistent quantities in white wines as well. The news was accepted enthusiastically by the Friuli Venezia Giulia vintners and winemakers, as this region produces a great quantity of quality white wines.

The research, however, doesn't stop here. In fact, it will continue focusing on the effects on the human metabolism of wine consumption in association with the use of prescription drugs.

The Progetto Villanova started one year ago and is made possible thanks to the funding by Tenuta Villanova from Farra d'Isonzo, the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, the universities of Udine and Trieste, as well as the associations Federdoc, Crita and Ersa. The scientific coordination of the research is provided by professor Angelo Vianello, principal of the School of Agriculture of the Trieste University.
